Wormrot: Dirge

09/05/11  ||  Habakuk

I believe this band doesn’t need much of an introduction anymore, except if you’ve been living under a rock for the last two years. The question is, can Wormrot continue their grinding rampage that started off internationally with Abuse? You can actually go and find out yourself for free here, but since you’re already reading this, you might as well just hear my thoughts about it.

I was a bit let down after the first full song (“Manipulation”) came public, as it seemed like a rehashed, a bit too exerted version of the same old stuff with a clumsily added half time break, but fuck me if they didn’t pick up after that first impression. Seen in the context of a full (well, 18-minute) album, I can’t say I’m bothered by anything in the slightest anymore. The fact that this is pretty similar to “Abuse” is actually a good thing, the latter being one of the best grind albums in recent years – and with no song over 2 minutes and most not even reaching the 60 second mark, there isn’t much to criticize in the songwriting department anyway. We still get hectic, crazy-ass tunes driven by a sawing, absolutely punk guitar, frantic drumming and a screamer alternating seamlessly between two to three styles – but luckily without those weird hardcore attempts from the debut.

No frills, no experiments, just a knack for unrelenting grind. Can you ask for more? Well, the experimentalist in you probably could, but I myself am pretty happy with the miraculously preserved groove and flow within the chaotic mess of d-beats, blasting and Phobia references presented. Bring on the pointless rage, bring on the adolescent defiance, bring on the songs written in minutes, and thanks for bringing along the ability to keep it together.

In a time of Finnish Opera cunts, Energy Drink sponsored bands, Lars Ulrich and imagery über alles, it’s good to be reminded time and time again of what I always considered the scene’s inherent punk spirit – however, it’s a pretty bad sign that it takes a style not even universally recognized as being “part of it” and that it takes a bunch of young guys from across the globe who don’t even seem to give a fuck – but who are they to blame?
