Týr: Land
26/06/08 || Euthanatos
My opinion is that every time you get a band from the Faroe Islands, just drop everything and focus on their album. Fortunately for me, not only is it cool to say you’re listening to a band from the Faroe Islands, Týr is also a very good band, in fact, one of my favorites in the viking metal genre. While “Eric the Red” truly exposed the band to the world, it wasn’t until “Ragnarok” that they truly became “the band they were born to be”. But “Land” features a fully matured band, with amazing depth to their songs and a complexity with folk elements that rarely is matched so well with metal.
“Land” is everything a viking metal album should be; it’s epic, it oozes fantastic landscapes and glorious adventures, the true sound of sea faring and tragic battles. Or, the perfect soundtrack for your RPG game. Something I love about this album is that Týr doesn’t use interludes for narrations and instrumental passages; instead, they incorporate them into songs, making the album sound a lot more coherent, one constant piece of music that keeps you fully immersed until the song. The vocals are as folk and epic as they can get, and performing in their native tongue sure gives an extra charm to it all. Even though I can’t understand jack shit of what they are talking about, I sure think it’s pretty.
If there is anything to complain about this album is that, yes, it is a little light on the metal side. But to whine would be brutally unfair, as there are so many great melodies, both instrumentally and vocally here, most tracks are so memorable, there really isn’t that much need for blast beats and hoarse vocals.
Great music to kick back to, let yourself sift through adventures of a time long gone. I really dig this band, they sound like no one else.
The cover: Stunning viking ship, being attacked by fire arrows. Fuck. Yes.
8.5 row, motherfuckers, row out of 10.
