Seth.ECT: Godspeak

05/05/11  ||  Khlysty

First off, if what you read in the review below makes you interested in this Turkish band and you want to sample their music, click on the link of their site and you can freely download the whole of “Godspeak” in mp3 or wav format. So, good for them for letting the listeners access their music easily. Of course, the point is, who’s gonna be really interested in such music. Well…

Seth.ECT hails from Ankara, Turkey and plays what to these ears sounds like a mix of controlled death metal and controlled techno/industrial: that is, the band equally uses the downtuned guitars and the rough vocals of death metal (although, now that I think of it, the vocals remind me more of deathcore/metalcore bands…) and the keyboards and other synthetic sounds of danceable industrial electronica or EBM. Kinda like latter-day Fear Factory doing club music, if you catch my drift…

Now, is this combination as bad is it might sound to some? No, it’s not. Actually, the linear development of the songs, the catchy basic riffs, the clear and punchy production and the oriental flourishes added here and there in the songs make the whole pretty listenable and enjoyable. The band obviously knows its shit and has a pretty clear vision of what it attempts and what its goals are.

The briskly-tempo’d songs, the carefully-placed breakdowns and the anthemic songwriting, all add up to make “Godspeak” pretty entertaining. Of course, the upfront use of synthetic sounds might annoy any listener who likes his guitars more upfront and crunchy. Also, I think that the band overreaches here: the songs are a bit longer than they could’ve been and the whole record seems tiring after the 7th or 8th song. A bit of trimming wouldn’ta hurt, is what I’m saying.

All in all, though, “Godspeak” is a much better record than I actually expected it to be. It’s not something groundbreaking, nor is it really something that has a place in an end-year, best-of list. But, for what it is, is pretty good and much better than a lot of the records that I’ve reviewed for GD coming from “proper” labels. So, I would suggest that if the description of Seth.ECT’s music makes you wanna give ‘em a spin, to do it. Won’t hurt a bit.
