Sectu: Inundate

20/06/11  ||  Khlysty

Hey, that’s not bad; not bad a-tall! Sectu comes from Sverige, has formed in 2005, “Inundate” is their first record and they play polkas. Nah, not really. Sectu plays what I can call as borderline-technical death metal, but with enough groove and song-oriented attitude, so as not to bore my tits off with useless technical shit, but to make me perk my ears and listen carefully to what these guys have to offer here.

And what they have to offer is pretty exciting: while there’s a lot of complexity and brutality to be found within the eight songs of “Inundate”, what really amazed me is how everything is combined to create interesting and listenable songs. How Sectu manage to combine death metal’s brutal technicality (a la Morbid Angel, an obvious favourite of the band members) with a Meshuggah-like cold, inhuman heavosity and dissonant complexity and a sly, melodic side. How the band’s overall sound is at the same time comfortably familiar and sui generis.

“Inundate” is a really good first effort, by a band that has its sound down to pat, is not afraid to experiment (the moody instrumental “Ceremonial March” is anything but filler) and knows exactly what it’s doing and how to achieve its goals. In a flood of middle-of-the-road death metal bands, Sectu has to offer much more than the genre probably deserves…
