Nyktalgia: Peisithanatos

07/08/08  ||  Kampfar

If familiar with Nyctalgia, which is much more likely than you being so with Nyktalgia, it means you have fiddled around with dirty genitals. Yes, this band is named after a venereal disease – a bi-effect of one, whatever, but since these Germans are necro, corpse paint and all, they of course had to put a “k” where a “k” doesn’t belong. Just the kind of attitude that gets you STD in the first place. So, how about the music, does it sound like cock disease?

Well, the vocalist scream as in serious pain, and it sounds genuine, so it could be that he recorded while taking pisses, as I’ve heard this or that disease, wouldn’t know which, makes it intensely painful to do just so. Anyway, his tortured screaming make me think of early Katatonia, more precisely, “Dance of the December souls”. He uses another, more ordinary approach for “Nekrolog”, but for the rest he screams his heart out of sorrow. Gets quite annoying, really.

The music on “Suckytitle” ranges from mid-tempo to half blasted BM, melancholic at it, a style I’m prone to like but most times hates. Bergraven is an exception, Nyktalgia isn’t. See, 10+ minutes songs most times going nowhere are not my idea of interesting and good. More like a boring slab of syphilis.

And now over to the gonorrhea of this equation, namely the fact that Nyktalgia found it wise to not distort the guitar. I kid you not, it sounds thinner than the scream of an anorectic crackwhore who haven’t had sperm for 14 days. Fucking idiots I say, for the music is not completely shit, which means it could actually have been almost close to good if they’d bothered to flesh out the skeleton.

I’ve heard depressive black metal tenfold worse than this; at least the melancholy on here sounds genuine. And that, my fellow shitheads, is the only genuinely positive thing I can say about this lot.

3 out of 10.
