Mustasch: Mustasch

18/05/10  ||  Trauma

Is it a bit passé to bring up some joke or anecdote about mustaches because this band is called Mustasch? Doesn’t stuff like that get old? It does to me. For the most part, rehashing obvious jokes to the point of absurdity gets old, and fast. The only kind of jokes that never get old are penis jokes, fart jokes, and poo jokes. I could laugh at those for the rest of my life.

So what music do we get from “Mustasch” by Mustasch? Technically speaking, it’s heavy metal. I get more mainstream rock vibes from this, though. It’s a style of rock that suits me just fine, though. It’s catchy when it wants to be, and always heavy. That’s I think where the strength really lies — being heavy. What kind of pseudo-journalist would I be if I didn’t go into this music without first knowing a bit of their previous musical history if they had any? Probably just as shitty, but wholly misinformed is what. Here are my findings: “Mustasch” is better than the previous record, but not as good as the first two.

That, however, doesn’t mean it’s bad. No sir-fucken-ree. As good as their other records? Not even close. Mustasch lost a lot of something along the way. It’s been gained back a bit on “Mustasch”, and if I was a betting man, which I’m not, I’d wager that Mustasch decided to hop off their other track and take a ride on a new one for the remainder of their career. I can respect that, but I still think there’s some work to be done with the songwriting to get it past sounding like dad’s metal.

You’re got some decent-to-good tunes here like “Heresy, Blasphemy”, “Mine”, and “Damn it’s dark”. “Tritonus” is a decent instrumental closer. Outside of that, though, you’ve got little in the way of more entertaining music. “I’m frustrated” I like but only because I certainly feel the way he sings about quite often. Ralf’s pretty much always had a good guitar tone on all the records and this time around that’s no different. There’s also been some lineup changes since before, namely guitarist and drummer, but you don’t exactly notice that. It seems like at this point in their career it’s Ralf’s band and the only way Mustasch will sound any different is if Ralf is gone.

“Mustasch” is worth checking out if you’re at all interested in the band in question, though I recommend starting out with their first couple LPs and first EP. There are some okay songs to be found on here, but nothing too spectacular or worth coming around to all that often.
