Horn: Jahreszeiten

15/02/12  ||  Cobal

Yes, black metal… again. Yes, a solo project… again. Yes, from Germany… again; and YES, may I start this shit referring to the cover of the album… again. You’ll all coincide I’m sure, cover art is good as long as it tells us effectively something about the music inside; effectively indeed, except not too obviously. Well, this simple picture with a logo on it fulfills exactly these requirements. It is airy, plain, simple, and somehow it provides the viewer with the sensation of some sort of freedom and calm. Again, this is what you’ll find once you play “Jahreszeiten”.

German for “seasons”, the title gives a good hint on the kind of black metal that Nerrath has in mind; neither a speed and aggressive one, nor an obscure, ugly and blasphemous one. I’d say this is rather inspirational black metal, so to speak. Songs take what they take and that’s it, this German fuck gives nothing for you getting bored or something. Also, I’m positive he isn’t trying to proof anything. Anything at all. Another thing this album ain’t is a display of nonse in terms of virtuosity, velocity or incomprehensible and tiring scales and riffs.

Au contraire, songwriting here is rather focused on sewing together some simple melodic lines (mainly guitars, clean and harsh vocals and some keyboards every now and then), providing with this a richer texture. Result? Great! For the most experienced listeners, this gives us the chance to listen once and again always being able to discover a different melody within.

Now, no, no, NO, this isn’t melodic black metal if that’s what you’re thinking. It also has its severity, yet, this time ‘tis quite implicit. Don’t believe me? Have you’re fag fan-of-Evanescence-or-whatever-shit-he-listens-to little brother listen to the whole album straight, and be ready for forty three minutes of incessant crying and bitching. LOL.

Had I intended to describe this record in one word, I would have used te only word that actually summarizes what I think of it: it’s epic. Not epic in the terms of all those geeks out there calling so whatever piece of shit they find somewhat enjoyable, no. I mean it, the music here once more will make you feel in an undefinite time and place, you’ll only now it was centuries ago. It’s just… this brings up one little problem, right?

I know! There’s TONS AND TONS of epic shit circulating everywhere! So, why on earth did I fix my eye on this one? I don’t care, you’ll know only if you check it out. Keep your mouth shut for a while and listen. It might not be the most original work ever, but hey: which one is these days, right? Enjoy.
