Hatesphere: Hatesphere

09/11/02  ||  Lord K Philipson

The very nice guys of Hatesphere sent this album to me, not knowing I would crash their career by reviewing it on Global Domination. THAT was a joke.

I’m fed up with bands named something with hate. The Project Hate, Hatebreed, Hatesphere, Hate Eternal, Hate, you name it. These fine men from Denmark, however, appeal to me for sure. I have always had a soft spot for At The Gates-ish deathrash and Hatesphere deliver the goods flawlessly.

It’s top-notch musicianship and the production is excellent, as it always is when it’s done by that old Invocator-fucker Jacob Hansen. Kudos to him for once hosting one of the best bands from Denmark, and now moving on to producing them.

The first track, oddly enough entitled just “Hate”, is a straight kick-in-the-nuts thing. Pretty fast stuff all the way through with some neat mosh-able parts as expected. It also holds a few “fuck/fucking/fucked” words, which gets extra-points in my ever-so-referred-to book of bullshit and other extravaganza. Also, this track includes a really cool passage with drums and bass guitar only that I definitely will steal for our next album. “Picture This” shows off some nice leads and a heavy groove throughout the whole song. It’s a pretty mid-paced track all the way. “Addicted Soul” is one of the first tracks I heard with these guys off Audiogalaxy and it is one of the reasons I got hooked (the rest being the other songs I downloaded, duh …). Here they include some grind-drumming as well. Me likey grind in small doses.

The verse in “Bloodsoil” is awesome and I like Jesper’s way of playing with the rides, “Down For Good” is another favorite track, and “No Sense” is bold metal for sure, heavy and decent. I love the begining of “Preacher”, though the concept of the spoken word intro is getting a bit overrused. It’s cool when it’s done in Danish, though. “Dead” contains an intro sample from some movie, a little Meshuggah-like riffing at the beginning, and later, after a few listens, it turns out to be one of the better songs on the album. “Ill Will” starts off with farts and shit, which actually made me laugh a bit. It’s full of power metal screams, etc., and it picks up, though it’s definitely not an ace in my deck of cards.

The songs pretty much follow the same concept on through the album, and why shouldn’t they? High quality deathrash all the way.

You have it all here, the speed, the heavy parts, the nice guitar solos and everything that comes with the “100 Tips For Playing Deaththrash the High Quality Way, Stickers and Notebooks Included” box set.

Actually, that might be exactly the problem. It’s been done many times before, and also a lot better, but I really like this album for some reason. It might be because the guys are nice and all, but I actually think it’s the music. How weird …

Ok, lemme pick a rating then … hmm … originality gets zero points, but I don’t think that was their goal either. They just wanted to create some fucken heavy music, and that they did. All this bullshit results in a … ok …having a hard time deciding here … fuck it, to me it feels like very close to a 7 out of the oh-so glorious 10. So let’s go with that, almost a 7. Writing “almost a 7” looks better than a “6.8”, but that’s what I wanna give. More 7 than 6, that’s for sure. There you go, I knew I was one decisive fucker.

Make sure to check this band out, they are worth it. Let’s go for a 7 then, just becoz I can:

7/10
