Enthroned: Pentagrammaton

09/11/11  ||  Charl du Plessis

Perhaps it’s unfair to create a build up to Pentagrammaton when it was released as I have been doing it with every release of them since 1995 (Prophecies of Pagan Fire) With 13 former members it takes precious commitment, which is seriously impressive. Pity Charles Manson didn’t have this kind of musical guidance when he was doing his thing and was forced to get by to the sounds of the Doors and other hippie bullshit. Surely things would have been different. Break on through.

A typical start to another black metal album with a touch of harmonious keyboards and twisted synth angel hymns that soon pans out into blasts from hell. Nothing much has changed. The rest of the album is pure fucking metal with very little time to breathe in between songs.

I’m not disputing that this is by far not their greatest work as there are other albums rotting in die-hard black metalheads’ CD collections that perhaps deserves more of a mention than this one. But fuck it. Giving this a spin will get you your daily dosage of epic black fucking metal.

Great production, great sound and great concepts. Enthroned steers clear of gothic wankery of the modern day melodic “black technical metallers” What they did in 1995 they still do in 2011, with a little help of better studios and probably a better budget to go with it. It all sounds fucking great and hats off to them for that. If you didn’t enjoy their previous releases you won’t like this one. If you did, you will love this in equal proportions. Apart from a better quality recording compared to earlier years it’s “Towards the Skullthrone of Satan” revisited with a vocalist similar sounding in true grunt black Satanic rock n roll.
Its aggressive, extreme black metal with “no balls left attached to your strings” metal. Something you listen to in conjunction with every other Enthroned release to make your life complete… Enthroned rules supreme in the black metal realms of non Scandinavia. An album with plenty of interesting, yet old ideas. Worked well then,still works well for me now.If Epic black metal is your vice then get hold of this fucking album.

Turn up track four, “Ornament of grace”, it’s good shit indeed. If not, go fuck yourself. Amen.
