Egnum: 2009

17/12/09  ||  Smalley

No, I don’t know why there’s a funky, Arabic calligraphy-meets-math equation on the cover here, or why Egnum’s three members call themselves “S”, “L” & “K”; maybe Mercedes-Benz thinks Egnum will be getting big soon, so they payed them off off to use those names. It wouldn’t be a surprise, since Mercedes just payed me off to mention them in this review (leafs through stack of $20 bills). Anywho, this a very short (less than 8 minutes) but pretty sweet black metal demo, surprisingly enjoyable for how low-fi it is; not low-fi in the Darkthrone, dentist drill-guitar sense, mind you, but imagine something with a less screech-y, much thicker guitar sound, and you’ll have a better idea of what “Promo 2009” is like. The riffs here are nicely aggressive and headbangable, and the songwriting has enough variation in it to keep my interest, so that’s what wins most of “Promo”‘s points with me.

Additionally, the surprisingly audible bass and good drum performance wins “Promo” a few more points as well, and while the somewhat subdued, low-key growls here are just okay, and the low-fi guitar does get a little annoying at times, this is still pretty well-done black metal overall. By the way, both of the songs here are available on Egnum’s MySpace, so feel free to experience ‘em for yourselves, since I definitely enjoyed ‘em. Should I give this one a higher score, perhaps? Nah, it just isn’t long enough for that, but still, it whetted my appetite for the upcoming Egnum album, so job well done guys!
