Downthesun: Downthesun

26/01/10  ||  InquisitorGeneralis

Fortunately Downthesun has gone Downthemotherfuckingdrain. Unfortunately I picked up their self-titled, and thankfully only, release way back in the my college days when I just getting into metal and thought that crappola like this (which I saw on “Headbangers Ball”) was really badass. I was wrong. Downthesun is derivative, bland nu-metal with nothing going for it but a flimsy connection to Slipknot (I think they know the clown guy, or were molested by the clown guy) that failed to help these fuckos achieve anything close to success. They called it quits a year after this album’s release. The phrase “fish or cut bait” comes to mind. Amazon.com, the ultimate source for all things metal, describes “Downthesun” as…

“Ugly alternative metal spliced with the visceral approach of death metal.”

Well, they got the ugly part right. However, death metal this is not…not even fucken close. Alternative metal? Maybe, whatever the hell that means. A few bands managed to successfully mix 90’s angst alterna-rock with metal, like Mudvayne, Powerman 5000, and Slipknot, but success stories like those three are few and far between. For the most part this genre is dead and good riddance to it.

Medicated found its way on to MenstraulTV and has a somewhat catchy intro. And that’s it. The samples combined with the two annoying screamo vocalists kill it, kill it good. Don’t forget about the Chuggah Chuggah tough-guy guitar riffs, there are tons of them to go around. Coroner made some of the best metal ever with just three people while bands like Downthesun went for the group orgy approach… and fail miserably. More is not always better if the more is a bunch of shit you don’t need…

LIKE DOUCHEBAGS WHO SAMPLE AND DJ AND EXTRA FUCKING VOCALISTS!!!

The rest of “Downthesun” alternates between wannabe aggressive screaming and melodic, pussy hard rock. A few hints of genuine heaviness are in there, especially on “Pure American filth”. Weepyvagtasatic shit like “Lucas toole” and “Listen” kills that right quick. “We all die” wins the award for most original song title in 2002 and the samples really add to “Jars” by sampling the sound of…you guessed it… someone hitting some fucken jars. Haha, I hope these guys slap themselves on the forehead every time they think about giving 1/6 of the $600 bucks or so they made on this piece of shit to the DJ member. Only the drummer really deserved to get paid anyway, he’s kinda sorta decent.

This is crap, don’t buy it. Plenty of good metal came out in the early 2000s but this ain’t it. If you like generic, nu-metal alterna-rock shit listen to some Soulfly or something. Downthesun is Purefuckenanalvomit.
