Dismember: Dismember

I’ve been putting off this review forever. I don’t know why since this is actually one of the more interesting Dismember albums. I’m just gay like that.
Forefathers and frontrunners of a particular style of death metal since “Like an Ever Flowing Stream”, after “Massive Killing Capacity” everyone knew who these guys were and liked to lick their balls. Oddly enough, Dismember never quite “made it”, at least not in the general manner death metal bands do. Maybe because of that, Dismember fell into some kind of limbo, maintaining somewhat of a following but never really making headlines. Our usual approach to a new album would be: “oh, a new Dismember album… ok”, and that would be that. I really wish this self-titled record would change that, as it is a very good one. All the faggotry has apparently been set aside from their songwriting and this is one of the most straight-forward offerings since their early days.
All tracks reek of old school death metal, a cross between early Entombed, Possessed and… er… something else I can’t quite place my finger on. Point being, it’s good, and you should listen to it. “Death Conquers All” is your quintessential “I don’t give a fuck” starter; furious and evil. “Europa Burns” is ballsy, as it’s only the second song and is totally slow-paced, completely changing the tempo. It’s interesting enough and sets the mood nicely for followers “Under a Blood Red Sky”, with awesome riffage, and “The Hills Have Eyes”, my favorite of the bunch. Reminds me a lot of “Massive Killing Capacity” material.
This will probably feature as one of the most entertaining death metal albums all year long, simply for the reason that Dismember’s only intention was to kick some ass and not impress or appeal to anyone. Well, that’s how it always should be done.
The cover: Some skulls and shit. Nothing special, but fitting.
8,5 massive killing capacities out of 10.
