Devouring: Decomposed

21/06/14  ||  Dinu

Devouring is a death metal band from Sweden this is their self-titled debut. There are 10 tracks on the new album and the overall running time is just under half an hour. The album has a lot of interesting things going on and the production is slick and there are a lot of good ideas that the band explore musically.

“Devouring” is the album opener and it is an all-out pounding. The band has a thing for theatrics and this is a very good way to start off. Shades of King Crimsonesque progressive riffs echo along the passages of this track. The second track “Bloodsoaked disarray” is a little gem. Tight drumming and even tighter riffs make it worth a spin.“Abysmal descent” is the third song and it builds up on the momentum of the first two. The vocals kick off in earnest at this point and the songwriting is original and I liked the way the songs slow down just as a fresh assault begins.

“Voices of endless decay” is the fourth track and it bored me. The riffs are unoriginal and the vocals are low-key. The album threatens to lose its ambiance around “It stretches in the hollow” but before I could write it off, “Boiling blood” and “Ode to the end” prove me wrong. The vocals grind and charge ahead and out comes “From the darkness”, the seventh track and one of the best off this album and my favorite. It is catchy and groovy and I loved it all the way. “Decomposition” is refreshing and original. There are a lot of cool time signatures and it remains perhaps the most technically refined song off this album. It closes the album at the 36th minute.

Overall, the production is top notch and I admired the way these Swedes have managed to pull off another good album and their list looks impressive. Devouring are a band to watch out for in the days to come. Do give this a listen. Its worth a spin or two.
