Deadlock: Wolves

05/04/07  ||  Lord K Philipson

“Wolves”? Now that’s a fucken silly title for a album. Here’s one for yer next piece: “Sheep”. You didn’t see that fucken coming, did you? Anypoodle, Deadlock’s doing pretty fine with their metal that includes some sweet-assed Blümchen inspired (I’m not kidding, just listen to “End begins” for example) roughness alongside some damn sweet vocals courtesy of Sabine (chick) and Johannes (dude). And let’s not forget the obvious In Flames and Dream Theater (“Bloodpact” has got some nice stolen DT guitar things going on) thefts together with some dangerously close to power metal influences here and there, without it being power metal (thank fuck), I might add. But Deadlock’s way better than that description. And they are also a lot more. Not to mention talented.

Guitarists Gert and Sebastian likes to show off their guitar skills, which in the long run might become a little boring and predictable, no matter how good them axes sound, and they sure sound fucken good. Guitar wankery is an abomination, if it’s not done by Yngwie J. Malmsteen, then it’s definitely a huge abomination, though acceptable – becoz it’s fucken Yngwie. THE FUUUUUUUUUUURY FOR FUCK’S SAKE!!!

Actually, Yngwie just released one awesome album, and that’s the debut. The follow-up is fine as well when I think about it. That was back in the day when The Fury knew how to write actual songs with guitar wankery in them instead of just guitar wankery over and over them. Also, Yngwie is fat. His ego is even fatter. I love Yngwie. He’s the only rockstar Sweden ever spawned.

But no matter how much my penis likes Yngwie, this isn’t Yngwie. And it’s not Swedish. Deadlock are Germans, but let’s not hold that against them, I guess it’s not their fault after all. They lost the war though, let’s not forget that.

Where the fuck was I?

Ah, Deadlock. Shitty name aside, Deadlock’s a quite good fucken band. A band with a really nice-to-the-ears gal (notice how I don’t call her bad names, I must really like her) doing vocals. Oh, I mentioned that already? Let’s talk about Yngwie then. Yngwie was born in the 60’s. Or 50’s. He’s a legend. Just look at him, everything about Yngwie screams rockstar.

Where the fuck was I?

Right, Deadlock. Deadlock reminds me of “Wedlock”, the fantastically crappy movie with one of the world’s worst actors, Rutger Hauer, and some whore. Not that it has anything to do with Yngwie, or Deadlock, but hey…

Where the fuck was I?

Fuck, Deadlock, right… These fuckers have a large arsenal of influences from where they create their sound. One second it sounds like the mentioned In Flames, another like Dimmu Borgir, yet another it sounds like fucken something Avril Lavigne could have done (“To where the skies are blue”) and occasionally it’s just a wall of quality metal coming out of the speakers, complete with some blasts and growls. The concept is appealing though at times it all feel kinda unfocused. Not that it matters all that much, coz I dig Deadlock. What really stands out though are the vocals from said chick. If they didn’t have her I’d probably tear these guys a new asshole.

I should actually fucken despise this new wave metal thing, but I can’t. Come on guys, you can thank Sabine for being in the band now. It sure makes you a hella lot more interesting. Best tune: “We all shall bleed”. If all the tunes possessed the quality of this one, I’d give the album a fucken 8,5. But they don’t. What this track does hold though is as follows: One of the best fucken choruses I have heard in a very, very long time. I think I’ll fucken make it my melody for incoming calls on my cellphone even. That says quite a bit. I recommend Deadlock becoz this album’s been spinning at my place, and in my mp3-player, over the last weeks. That means they are fucken good.

By the way, Yngwie is gay.

7,5 Yngve Malmsten’s out of 10.

Ending note: This review might not have been all about Deadlock themselves, but it definitely covered a bit of Yngwie and Rutger Hauer, so we are scoring beautiful goals here.
