Brujeria: Brujerizmo
27/04/10 || Kampfar
A Spanish word Brujeria is, to witchcraft it translates, and hadn’t it been for a Spaniard – that Columbus dude exactly – Mexicans wouldn’t have used it. Fuck history, I’d love to be a witch! The manliest craft around it might not be, broomsticks and all, but according to Wikipedia also men can learn how to perform such nonsense. Nonsense or not, as soon as I have hunted down the “Dummies guide to evil witchcraft” I’ll invoke malignant brain tumor upon ‘ye all.
And of course also A.I.D.S.
Brujeria is said to be a Mexican band, according to The Metal Archives for instance, but entirely true it isn’t. Not exactly an expert on Brujeria no, they may have started out in Mexico for all I know, but something I do know for sure. Here goes: since the start many a gringo, from numerous bands of the famous kind, have had their white-thrash hands involved in this band supposedly hailing my favorite dego-land as home. And most noticeable amongst just mentioned ghosts is no doubt Billy Gould, courtesy of Faith No More, whom served under this moniker from 1989 to 2002. Doing the bass, of course.
Fuck history, yet again, time to explain why I love this album.
And the main reason would be the incredible catchy, and heavy, riffing as performed by a fat turd here known as Asesino but otherwise Dino Cazarez. An ugly bastard he is, and then some, but fuck me in the ass with broken glass if the obese troll doesn’t know how to work his guitar into rifftastic territories. But enough about him and more about me already. Nah, fuck me, much more important it is to mention the vocals as performed by a certain dude named Juan Brujo. His effort is not quite a growl, not at all a sneer, but fucking fine his performance nonetheless is. And, every last line is mexecuted in Spanish, a fucking relief this in a world where (close to) every metal band think of English as the one and only language. Yep, I’m fucking tired of hearing broken English by now.
Before I wrap this review up I need to talk a bit about the production, it being a mighty fine one according to my seasoned ears into extremity. The snare could perhaps do with some adjusting, perhaps, but other than that I downright dig what I hear. The bass backs up the guitar, adding heaviness aplenty, and other than that you’ll hear every little detail the band crammed into the mix. I think.
If groovy death with big cojones sounds like a splendid mix to you, that same you would be wise to give this one a go.
Viva México cabrón! And, kill all gringos.
