Angrepp: Warfare

Breaking News — Habakuk reported not to like Black Metal — Breaking News
However, when done with a twist, I can stand it. Examples being Dødheimsgard’s “Supervillain outcast” thanks to the industrial borrowings, or newer Darkthrone because of the crust influence. Black-thrash arguably is tolerable as well. Angrepp, a five-piece from everyone’s favorite country, Sweden, are in the vein of the latter two. Musically, at least, because I don’t see their tongue as firmly in cheek as Fenriz’ and Nocturno Culto’s. Soundwise, these folks take a Black Metal base, think guitar sound, harmonics, raspy screams and occasional blasting, songwise they play something between punk and thrash. Which isn’t too bad to begin with.
Their first full-length CD “Warfare” starts off with a standard machineguns-tanks-whatever intro and starts blasting Toxic Holocaust-style thrash beats. “Angrepp” means “attack”, so they didn’t really have a choice here. Quickly, one gets the impression that these dudes are not the go-to guys for risky choices anyway. Everything’s being played pretty safe in well-trodden paths of neither exactly fast, nor exactly slow black-thrash – let’s call it uptempo – and solidly executed. Feet have been seen tapping, heads nodded, but that’s about it in the approval department. Well, it’s not a bad genre, this. Plus, the singer is comprehensible and nicely in the middle-range between death and black metal vocals. Groundbreaking stuff I can not report, though. Simplistic riffing, the occasional half-time break thrown in for good measure, polka thrash and d-beat drumming, all’s here and that cannot be wrong.
Would I go and see them live? Probably, if circumstances were favorable. Would I track this album down? Probably not. If I were fishing in a huge tank filled with CD’s, I probably wouldn’t throw it back, though. Too bad I never have my fishing rod with me when I come past the countless Bargain Basins in the area. So: “Warfare” is definitely listenable stuff if urgent listening needs for Blackened Thrash-meets-Punk arise. Which rarely happens with me, but maybe you are different? Yep you, with the black shirt and studded leather belt. Go check it out then, will ya?
