Accu§er: Diabolic
22/06/13 || Habakuk
I share with Lord K, the venerable owner of this site, a fervent love for Who dominates who?, Accu§er’s 1989 masterpiece. Still, I haven’t actually checked out anything else from their discography until today, when I read that they actually just released another album. Just like in 2010 and 2011, but who am I to know. Anyway, this is practically fresh off the conveyor belt, so let’s see how it measures up to, shall we?
Well, there is only one remaining member from times past. Has this stopped Sodom, Exumer et cetera from keeping on going? No. There you have it. Still, it of course means that this has little connection to and continuity from the days of yore, contrary to what the band name might suggest. Granted, Accu§er might not exactly have a big reputation to lose. They never really ventured above tier three, but then again here I am with high expectations. Bad fucken luck, Accu§er.
Of course they weren’t matched. But these dudes do their shit better than most of the revivalists. And they avoid coming across as a bunch of total apes, which apparently is not a given. Energy levels are kept high throughout the relatively long songs (none under 5 minutes), but a little more conciseness couldn’t harm. After all, this isn’t exactly progressive stuff, so a little trimming here and there surely wouldn’t take too much away in terms of ideas. Instruments-wise, the whole affair is very tight and you can hear that this is an experienced bunch altogether. Riffmeisters Thoms and Schmidt definitely have an idea of their craft as well, and they can rely on their rhythm section to support it. So even though length is an issue, there are no moments where it simply plods along. On the contrary, at times, there are some serious, skillfully crafted grooves to be found. And just so you know: the vocals are pretty typical death/thrash shouts – they get the job done, but there is nothing too remarkable about them.
If you liked what Kreator has done recently, you might take a liking in this album. Personally, I don’t think this modern style of thrash can be done much better – maybe shorter?! However, I still haven’t been convinced to give up my love for the old school, and this album does nothing to change that. It was no chore to go through either, though. So anyway, if this album opens but some minds towards “Who dominates who?”, it definitely will serve a worthy purpose already.
